Florence Akullu's story
In Kaberamaido, women and girls face a lot of challenges but the worst are domestic violence and child marriages. In my village for instance, girls continue to be married off at a tender age, denying them the opportunity to complete school and condemning them to lifetime of abuse and poverty. The lack of education coupled with domestic violence disempower women and girls and inhibits their ability to stand up for their rights.
“I loved school and I dreamt of becoming a
teacher one day but this was not to be. I was born a
girl and had to get married to bring cows home”
